The Public Comment Period for submitting written comments to EPA on the All Ages Lead Model has been extended to December 12, 2005 as described in the November 3 Federal Register Notice.
The All-Ages Lead Model (AALM) Version 1.05, is an external review draft software and guidance manual. EPA is releasing this software and associated documentation for public review and comment beginning September 27, 2005, until October 27, 2005. The public comments will be accepted, as indicated in the September 27 Federal Register Notice. The SAB meeting details are now available in the October 14 Federal Register Notice.Comments may be submitted and viewed using EPA's electronic docket (edocket) at www.epa.gov/edocket. Background
The All Ages Lead Model (AALM) guidance will predict lead concentration in body tissues and organs for a hypothetical individual, based on a simulated lifetime of lead exposure. Statistical methods will be used to extrapolate to a population of similarly exposed individuals. The purpose of the model is to provide risk assessors and risk managers with a tool for rapidly evaluating the impact of possible sources of lead in a specific human setting where there is a concern for potential or real human exposure to lead.
The precursor to the All Ages Lead Model (AALM) was the Integrated Exposure Uptake Biokinetic (IEUBK) Model for Lead in Children. Version 0.99d of the IEUBK was released in March 1994, and has been widely accepted in the risk assessment community as a tool for implementing the site specific risk assessment process when the issue is childhood lead exposure.Recognizing the need to expand the model to include older childhood and adult lead exposure and to add several features not currently available with the IEUBK model, the AALM was initiated in FY98, when the exposure module was expanded to a full age range (0-90 years) and revised to incorporate several new model features and user options. In FY99, additional AALM development was accomplished with the expansion of the uptake and biokinetic modules, based on published model data summarized in: Leggett, R.W. (1993) Environmental Health Perspectives: 101(7) p 598-616. Each of the three modules were circulated for limited internal (within EPA) review and comment during FY00.
