The Census Bureau conducts a census of governments at five year intervals, and an annual survey for the intervening years.  The state and local government finances are available in files and viewable tables.  The statistics cover government financial activity in four broad categories of revenue, expenditure, debt, and assets

Description of Available Files
* Summary Tables viewable summary tables for the U.S. and individual states
* Summary Table Spreadsheet spreadsheet format of the U.S. and state summary tables
* State by Type of Government - Public Use Format Each record contains one item code and amount for each type of government by state. Also includes records for the District of Columbia, and a U.S. Total. (fixed length, no delimiter)
* State by Type of Government - Comma-delimited Each record contains amounts for all types of government by State, including the District of Columbia and a U.S. Total
* State by Type of Government - CV`s Comma-delimited Each record contains the measurement of error, Coeficient of Variation (CV), expressed as a percent, for state and local and local-only governments
* Individual Unit File - Public Use Format detail item code data within each government unit (fixed length, no delimiter)
* County-Area file - Public Use Format Each record contains one item code and amount for each county area. (fixed length, no delimiter)
* Directory Information File basic identifier information for each unit of government for that survey year. (fixed length, no delimiter)

* Electronic Data Collection web-based form provided for respondents to complete the survey
* Government Finance and Employment Classification Manual Explains how government finances and employment data are categorized, and explains the item codes used to create those categories.
