A wide range of elementary-secondary education statistics are collected for the National Center of Education Statistics (NCES).

These include:

  • Nonfiscal data are collected in the Common Core of Data (CCD) program. These data cover general descriptive information on all public elementary and secondary schools, all local education agencies, and all state education agencies in the United States, as well as counts of students and staff.

  • Fiscal data are collected in the CCD program's National Public Education Finance Survey (NPEFS). Data show state-level revenues and expenditures for various functions of elementary-secondary education.

To view statistical products from these data, go to the NCES web site at http://nces.ed.gov/ccd/

The Census Bureau also annually collects finance data for each public school system. This information can be accessed from the Finance Section of the main page.

Respondents in the nonfiscal CCD program should go to http://www.census.gov/govs/www/ccd.html to access web-based data collection software for the State Nonfiscal Survey and downloadable software for the School and Agency surveys.

Respondents to NPEFS should go to http://surveys.nces.ed.gov/ccdnpefs for web-based reporting.
