These files contain records for a sample of housing units with information on the characteristics of each unit and each person in it. While preserving confidentiality (by removing identifiers), these microdata files permit users with special data needs to prepare virtually any tabulation.
PUMS files are available from the American Community Survey and the Decennial Census. Additional microdata files are available from other surveys. See the individual listings under Subjects A-Z on the Census Bureau’s home page, or contact Customer Services on 301-763-INFO (4636).
The files listed below are available for purchase through the Census Bureau’s Catalog. Once you are in the catalog, you can locate them by selecting "Census 2000" and then, "Public Use Microdata Sample (PUMS) Files." The DVD containing the 1% and 5% files also contains user-friendly software.
A separate geographic equivalency file exists for each state. The files are located in each state directory and are named PUMEQS-XX.TXT, where "S" represents 1 or 5 and "XX" represents the state FIPS code.

The following data sets were released on magnetic tape and customers can arrange to purchase them on CD-ROM by contacting the Customer Services Center at (301) 763-INFO (4636). Such "on-demand" orders may cost more than our standard data products and take longer to process. The National Archives also sells these files.
