Instructions for using the NHMRR Web Query Form

When you select the Route Registry feature of this website,  you will be presented with a query form which allows you to enter the selection criteria you wish to apply to the Route Registry to produce your custom report.  There are six different parameters you can select with which to narrow down the entire national route registry database to only those routes you are interested in.  These parameters are: State, Category, Highway/Street, Route Origination Date, and Last Update Date.

When the form initially loads or when you hit the reset button at the bottom of the form, it defaults to a query which would produce all of the routes in the database.  The query is: All States, All Categories, and no special highway/street, or date requirements.  To limit your search, you can specify one, some, or all of these parameters.  The resulting query is formed by ANDing each of the parameter's selection criterion.

State

Using the scrollable-list presented on the query form, you can choose states that you would like to search to produce your custom route report.   You can select multiple states using the mouse and control - click.  Use the * All States * item to include all States, Territories, and Indian tribes in your search.   In the example on the right, only routes in California and Colorado will appear in the report.

Category

Another scrollable-list located on the query form allows you to choose the categories that you can restrict your search to.  You can choose multiple categories or choose the * All Categories * item to include routes classified under any category.  Note: Many routes are categorized as designated or restricted for 'ALL NRHM Hazmats' or 'ALL Hazmats'.  Be sure to include one of these categories in your search if needed.  As an example, the query to the right will only select routes that are specifically designated for Poisonous Inhalation Hazards (PIH).  You may also want to include the 'ALL NRHM Hazmats' category to pick up routes which are designated for PIH by virtue of their 'ALL NRHM Hazmats' status. Scroll down on the listbox to the right to see that PIH is selected.

Highway/Street

This parameter allows you to limit your search to routes based on particular highways or streets.  For example, you could enter either I-80, I80, or Interstate 80 to see all routes based on I-80.  All state highways are denoted with State, so California State Route 20 is represented as S-20, S20 or State 20.  An example of a County route is C-35, C35, or County 35.  You also use wildcards (i.e.: Main* shows Main St. and Main Ave.).  To find all interstates, state highways, and county highways, use I-*, S-*, and C-*, respectively. To find all Tunnels or Bridges, use *tunnel* or *bridge* To find States with No Routes Designated, enter NRD as the highway.

Route Origination Date

You can search for routes based on a range of route origination dates.  These are the dates in which the routes were first designated or restricted by the routing agency.  Type in dates in MM/DD/YY format.  The "From" date is on the left and the "To" date is on the right.  For routes originated between 12/01/94 and 1/15/95, you would enter the dates as the appear in the example to the right.

Route Origination Date:

Last Update Date

You can also select routes based on the last date that the route entry was updated in this registry.   This is a good way to find routes that have changed since you last checked the Registry.  In the example on the right, the query calls for routes that have been updated in the system after 09/01/96.

Last Update Date:

Terse vs. Verbose Reports

You can select between two different types of report output by selecting from the Terse/Verbose dropdown menu next to the query button.   The Terse report displays only the route description which is comprised of the street or highway upon which the route is based and two termini which define where along the street or highway the route begins and ends.  The verbose report includes additional pertinent notes and information about the route.

Finally, once you have entered selection criteria in one or more of these parameters, you can choose the Query button at the bottom of the query screen to process the query and return only the routes that satisfy the selection criteria.  Also, the Reset button will reset the form, which defaults to select all routes in the database.  For the example above, the Reset button will restore entries to the sample query.  To test the example query cited above, hit the query button above and you will see three routes in California which happen to meet all of the selection criterion in the example.
