Workforce Development, Education & Training

Workforce Development (WD) at GPO is a critical human capital process concerned with identifying future needs, developing a productive workforce, examining the skills of employees at all levels, and determining both strengths and skill gaps.  WD is responsible for helping to develop a workplace climate that drives the attainment of current and future agency goals through the use of transformational strategies in career development, education, and training. In short, WD is about preparing today's workforce for tomorrow's challenges.

GPO's strategic WD Plan promotes and establishes effective leadership, training, and career programs that strengthen the skills and abilities of managers and employees. This WD Plan seeks to create a workplace climate that supports, motivates, and gives every employee the opportunity to perform up to their full potential. Major components of this Plan include:

  • Improving employee performance of current duties;
  • Providing various means for developing employees' skills to meet current and future organization needs;
  • Providing opportunities for development of high-potential employees;
  • Providing employees with the necessary competencies to meet changes in organization policy, mission, structure, equipment or technology;
  • Maintaining specialized proficiencies;
  • Assisting with the upward mobility of lower-level employees.

Using a collaborative approach with the executive WD Advisory Team, workforce development is able to provide resources, information, support and facilitation to assist in developing internal resources and systems to support on-going success in organizational effectiveness, leadership development, and diversity and inclusion efforts. WD is not solely about training or educating employees, but involves transitioning employees and their supervisors to adapt to changes in the organization.  WD impacts on the success of our Agency's ability to recruit, promote, hire, and retain quality employees in the workplace.
