Geology Unit

The Department’s Geology Unit is managed by the State Geologist. During months appropriate for field work, the geologist is assisted by part-time scientists and students from the academic or private sectors who continue a program of geologic mapping in the state.

The principle responsibilities of the Geology Unit are:

  • To provide consultation to state agencies, especially DES;
  • To compile geologic information, synthesize reports, and expand the geologic database of the state;
  • To act as geologic liaison with federal and Canadian agencies, and other states; to initiate and manage geologic grants
  • To conduct research on the minerals, materials, and water resources of the state;
  • To coordinate special projects; and
  • To manage a state program of geologic publications and their editing and distribution in cooperation with the NH Department of Resources and Economic Development.
