Historic Preservation Success Stories

The U.S. Department of Transportation has assumed an integral role in preserving the Nation's heritage. DOT's operating administrations and State and local partners have invested more than $1 billion in transportation funds on more than 2,500 projects for Historic Preservation, Rehabilitation of Historic Transportation Facilities, and Archaeological Planning and Research since 1992. States continue to obligate about $100 million annually for 200 to 300 historic preservation related projects.

Here are a few examples of transportation projects that have resulted in the preservation of historic properties, facilitated heritage tourism and assisted the economic development of communities throughout the United States.

The area around Cumberlands Western Maryland Station is part of a $70 million project to develop the Western Terminus of the C&O Canal.

The reconstructed lighthouse keeper's cottage adjacent to the Port Isabel Lighthouse serves the area as a visitor center.

The Williamsburg Transportation Center was purchased in 2000 by the City of Williamsburg to increase the function and usefulness of the Center, while maintaining its 1935 character and charm.

The Temple Santa Fe Depot served as the headquarters for all Santa Fe operations in the Southern United States from 1910 until 1989.
