Federal Aviation Administration and Preserve America

The former Colonial plantation, Abingdon, on the grounds of Reagan National Airport, was stabilized and preserved for visitors.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is involved in a number of historic preservation efforts. The projects are generally funded as mitigation measures in response to National Environmental Policy Act reviews and National Historic Preservation Act Section 106 consultations.

The two principal historic properties the FAA owns are Reagan Washington National Airport and Dulles International Airport, both in the Washington DC area. While FAA owns these properties in fee title, the airports are operated by the Metropolitan Washington Airport Authority (MWAA), which has sole responsibility for their maintenance, management, and operation.

Both airports have facilities either on or eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places that have been maintained in a manner consistent with their historic character by MWAA.

Other examples of projects funded in part or in whole by the FAA include rehabilitation of historic terminal facilities at Newark and JFK Airports, and a residential sound attenuation program for the historic district in San Diego, CA, adjacent to the San Diego International Airport, Lindbergh Field.
