Description:
The state of North Dakota is firmly committed to building a high quality, environmentally-related research infrastructure that is relevant to our state and the region. The SIP project includes four major goals: (1) develop a comprehensive strategy for developing a nationally competitive environmental science and engineering research program; (2) increase the number of investigators that effectively compete for EPA grants; (3) increase the number of new research programs in environmentally related areas; and (4) increase the number of students who pursue careers in environmental science and engineering.
Approach:The four goals identified above will be accomplished as follows: (1) We will create an environmental Advisory Board composed of distinguished scientists and engineers to assist the North Dakota EPSCoR Steering Committee. (2) We will initiate an innovative grants program that will provide chairs and deans with the opportunity to secure startup funds for faculty they intend to hire. (3) We will initiate a competitive seed grant program that targets research programs in the early development stage that have high potential for attracting EPA grants. (4) We will develop human resource programs that reach out and form partnerships with businesses and industry in North Dakota.
Expected Results:The major result of our SIP program is to improve the State of North Dakota's capacity for performing environmental research. Specific results, following the goals outlined in the Project Description, include the following: (1) the Environmental Advisory Board Committee will develop a comprehensive plan that will improve environmental research capabilities at the two research universities that is relevant to North Dakota and neighboring states; (2) the start-up grants program will improve the ability of North Dakota's research universities to compete for first-rank faculty in environmental science and engineering; (3) the seed grant program will result in a number of new research programs in environmentally-related areas; and (4) the human resource program will increase the number of students who pursue careers in environmental-related areas in science and engineering while simultaneously strengthening the ties of environmental research to North Dakota businesses.
