Jennifer Hunter and Kristen Hughes

KEY WORDS: pretesting, SIPP, cash balance pension, cognitive interviewing

ABSTRACT

Staff conducted cognitive research to evaluate newly-proposed wording of a series of questions dealing with cash balance pension plans for the SIPP Retirement and Pension Module. Cognitive interviews were conducted with respondents covered by cash balance pension plans and also with respondents covered by other types of pension plans. The research showed that respondents are unfamiliar with the term "cash balance plan" and they do not recognize the plan from the definition included in the question. Some suggestions for changes to the question are included in the report.
