Statistics of U.S. Businesses

Data files used in the Statistics of U.S. Businesses (SUSB) program were created from the annual County Business Patterns (CBP) files. The SUSB data files are developed in cooperation with, and partially funded by, the Office of Advocacy of the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA).

SUSB tabulates the following key economic data items:

     Companies
     Establishments
     Employment
     Annual Payroll
     Additionally, receipts are available for 1997 & 2002

The SUSB program provides data for 1989-1998 under the Standard Industrial Classification System (SIC) and for 1998-2002 under the 1997 North American Industry Classification System (NAICS); however, a transistion was made with 2003 data to the 2002 (NAICS) codes.

NAICS allows us to provide company and establishment level statistics covering: forestry, fishing, hunting and agriculture support; mining; utilities; construction; manufacturing; wholesale trade; retail trade; transportation and warehousing; information; finance and insurance; professional, scientific, and technical services; educational services; health care and social services; accommodation and food services; and several more expanded industries. We have data files from 1989 to 2005 which we can tabulate at various geographic levels and industry detail.

We also have a longitudinal file, Business Information Tracking Series (BITS), which links establishments from year to year. Using this file, we are able to tabulate data for establishment births and deaths and employment expansions and contractions (example data files). Data pertain to the dynamics between years and are already available for a variety of yearly combinations.

Organizations use our data in a variety of ways. Government agencies and research analysts study changes in the economy, characteristics of small and large companies, and industry trends over time. Corporations use our geographic data to identify new and existing markets in which to sell their products.
