**************************************************************************** EXTRACT Release 1.5x **************************************************************************** EXT15x.EXE (where x is a character, e.g. j) contains the EXTRACT software program, documentation, and related files in compressed format. **************************************************************************** ** Installing EXTRACT ** 1. Verify system compatibility a. Operates with all IBM PC's and compatibles. DOS 3.x users must have at least 450 KB available after installing memory resident software, CD-ROM drivers, network drivers, etc.). DOS 5.0 or 6.x users may need 520 KB, generally requiring that DOS, CD-ROM drivers and network drivers be loaded into high memory. b. Verify that your CONFIG.SYS file contains the following lines: FILES = 20 [or a larger number] BUFFERS = 20 [or a larger number] (Creating or changing your CONFIG.SYS is further described in the documentation, EXTRACT.DOC) 2. Create a new directory on your hard disk, if you have not previously installed an earlier version of EXTRACT: MD \EXTRACT <ENTER> 3. Make this the current (default) directory: CD \EXTRACT <ENTER> 4. Uncompress the program, files, and documentation onto your hard disk: A:EXT15x <ENTER> EXT15x.EXE is a "self-extracting" archive containing EXTRACT.EXE and several related files in compressed form. [NOTE: If you have installed an earlier version of the program in this directory, you may be asked if it is "OK" to over-write EXTRACT.EXE and other files. Continue by typing 'Y' to each prompt.] 5. Create a "work" directory for temporary files, which must be different from your basic EXTRACT directory. The following command creates the subdirectory \EXTRACT\WORK, since it is issued while in \EXTRACT: MD WORK <ENTER> 6. Load auxiliary files: If you are using Census Bureau CD-ROMs other than the Economic Census and Agriculture Census discs, then you need to obtain separate "auxiliary files" for each disc. (If you do not have them, contact the source from which you obtained this program.) See the ....READ.ME file accompanying each set of auxiliary files for installation instructions. 7. Print out the complete documentation by typing: PRINT EXTRACT.DOC <ENTER> PRINT EXTUTOR <ENTER> (introductory text) PRINT EXTUTOR1.DOC <ENTER> (for Economic Census CD-ROMs) PRINT EXTUTOR2.DOC <ENTER> (for Economic Census CD-ROMs) PRINT EXTUTOR3 <ENTER> (for PL94-171 CD-ROMs) PRINT EXTUTOR4 <ENTER> (for 1990 Census STF 1 CD-ROMs) PRINT EXTUTOR5 <ENTER> (for 1990 Census EEO CD-ROMs) **************************************************************************** ** Starting EXTRACT ** 1. Make the new \EXTRACT directory the current directory: CD \EXTRACT <ENTER> 2. Start the program. EXTRACT <ENTER> 3. You will be asked to specify some drives and directories. If your configuration includes a CD-ROM reader, you must specify a CD-ROM drive letter. This is the letter you assigned when you first installed the reader; often, the reader is assigned the letter "L". You also will be asked to specify a "work directory." This is a directory on your hard disk (e.g., \EXTRACT\WORK as created in step 6 above) that EXTRACT uses to store temporary files. When the system asks for the location of auxiliary files, specify the subdirectory where you installed these files, e.g. c:\EXTRACT\1990AUX 4. If you have a problem and your PC uses extended memory beyond 640K RAM, type SET CLIPPER=E000 before running EXTRACT again. If this makes a difference, add SET CLIPPER=E000 to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. **************************************************************************** ** For More Information ** The mechanics of installing and using EXTRACT are explained more fully in the documentation, EXTRACT.DOC, which is created by the program EXT15a. In addition, step by step tutorials are contained in the EXTUTOR files. (See EXTUREAD.ME.)
