SHEM – Safety, Health, and Environmental Management

The SHEM Program is the REE mission area’s plan to effect optimal achievement of error-free and, therefore, accident-free task performance that involves employee, machine, and environmental relationships.

West Lafayette SHEM Goals

(Updated at least annually)

Safety

Ø      Identify safety equipment needs annually for inclusion in budget

Ø      Offer training to employees, including:

o       AED/First Aid/CPR

o       Defensive Driving

o       Forklift Operation and Safety

o       Trailer Safety

o       Tractor Safety

Ø      Encourage participation in freeWorkplace Violencetraining from Purdue University

Ø      Ensure all supervisors have copy of their responsibilities as outlined inREE Manual 230.0

Ø      Ensure all supervisors have viewed agency SHEMB video for supervisors

Ø      Complete all accident paperwork within 3 business days

Health (Industrial Hygiene, OMSP, Radiological Safety)

Ø      Promote Occupational Medical Surveillance Program (OMSP) participation

Ø      Provide REM training to all new employees

Ø      Increase participation in Location Wellness Program/President’s Healthier Feds Program

Ø      Complete Pesticide Training Program for those identified in ARMPS

Environmental Protection

Ø      Reduce gasoline usage in Government vehicles

Ø      Reduce water usage

Ø      Reduce paper usage by promoting two-sided printing and copying

Ø      Promote/provide RECYCLING of:

o       Ink jet cartridges

o       Magazines/catalogs

o       Batteries

Ø      Increase usage of rechargeablebatteries

Ø      Install motion detector lighting (where appropriate) for energy reduction

Ø      Review chemical usage annually

Ø      Encourage EMS training

Ø      ReviewEMSPolicy annually

Other (Animal Care & Use, Bio-safety, Physical Security, etc.)

Ø      Bi-monthly SHEM Committee meetings

Ø      NSERL security system development with MWA and ARS

Ø      Develop new Employee ID per Department of Homeland Security procedures
