New Orleans, La. – General Douglas O’Dell, federal coordinator for Gulf Coast Rebuilding, called today’s dedication of the new Archbishop Philip M. Hannan High School in Covington, La., a rebirth and cornerstone for education in the area.

“Education is paramount to the full and successful rebuilding of the New Orleans area,” said General O’Dell.  “As we all know, today’s students are tomorrow’s leaders, so it’s critical each student receives an education and learns skills that prepare them well for the challenges of tomorrow.

“Archbishop Hannan High School, with its long history of excellence in education, strong commitment to instilling values in its students and encouraging them to serve others, represents a significant rebirth in the broader New Orleans community and a cornerstone of community involvement.”

Archbishop Hannan High School was beginning its 17th year at its original location in St. Bernard Parish when it was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina in 2005.  With many residents then relocating to the Covington area on the Northshore of Lake Ponchartrain, the high school was relocated as well.  Classes at the new Archbishop Hannan High School campus are expected to begin in November.

O’Dell called reforms in education throughout the New Orleans area astonishing. He also commended local teachers and administrators for embracing the idea of working from a clean slate to rebuild and reprioritize, allowing new ideas to take shape and transform the area’s education system.

Philip Hannan, the former Archbishop of New Orleans, presided over today’s Mass dedicating his namesake school.

The Office of the Federal Coordinator for Gulf Coast Rebuilding has been engaged in facilitating and streamlining the recovery effort, providing key federal support and resources to state and local leaders, as well as reinforcing the federal government’s commitment to the people of the Gulf Coast.
