Mode of Administration

The NS-CSHCN is a module of the State and Local Area Integrated Telephone Survey (SLAITS), which is a random-digit-dialing (RDD) telephone survey that uses the sampling frame of the National Immunization Survey (NIS)

Survey Sample Design

In each of 78 Immunization Action Plan areas (which together comprise the United States), the NIS draws independent quarterly samples of telephone numbers and uses RDD to identify households that have one or more children 19 to 35 months of age to conduct the NIS interview. SLAITS modules such as the NS-CSHCN then screen for the presence of any children in the household, and if there are any children in the household, conduct the NS-CSHCN interview with the adult who is most knowledgeable about the child's health status.
