AHCPR Invites Press to Second Annual Conference on Translating Evidence into Practice

The Agency for Health Care Policy and Research (AHCPR) is convening a second annual conference to explore how health care research informs practitioner and consumer decisionmaking as well as health policy development. The conference, intended for health care providers, educators, managers, policymakers, health services researchers and others, is sponsored by AHCPR's Center for Practice and Technology Assessment.

The "Translating Evidence Into Practice" conference has several objectives:

• Explore the use of systematic reviews, meta-analyses and other tools in applying clinical research to practice.
• Discuss current research activities, results and applications of recent projects that use clinical research to enhance health care decisionmaking.
• Identify issues and methods related to enhancing the usefulness of research evidence for health care decisionmakers.
• Examine the experience of organizations in implementing and evaluating how clinical research is used for health care decisionmaking.

The conference includes the following plenary speakers: W. Scott Richardson, M.D., Assistant Professor of Medicine, University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (keynote speaker); David Satcher, M.D., Ph.D., Assistant Secretary for Health and Surgeon General; John Eisenberg, M.D., Administrator, AHCPR; Edward H. Shortliffe, M.D., Ph.D., Professor of Medicine and of Computer Science, Stanford University; Scott Weingarten, M.D., M.P.H., Director of Health Services Research, Cedars-Sinai Health System; and Douglas B. Kamerow, M.D., Director, AHCPR's Center for Practice and Technology Assessment.

Plenary sessions are at 8:30 a.m. each day.
