AHRQ Announces New Resource on Prenatal Care Effectiveness

Press Release Date: December 16, 1999

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), formerly the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research, today announced the availability of a new resource, Prenatal Care Effectiveness and Implementation, for maternal and child health professionals, policymakers, and health care managers. The book, edited by Marie C. McCormick of Harvard School of Public Health, Boston, MA, and Joanna E. Siegel, Arlington Health Foundation, Arlington, VA, discusses the practice and potential of prenatal care services for improving the long-term health of women and children. The contributors evaluate the effectiveness of prenatal care interventions and outline a framework for prenatal care that extends beyond the perspective of the short-term outcomes of newborns. The publication is the result of an AHRQ-sponsored conference on prenatal care and examines both traditional medical interventions as well as social support and behavioral interventions.

The paperback book is published by Cambridge University Press, and can be ordered through its Web site at http://www.cup.org.
