AHRQ Releases Request for Applications on Patient Safety for Research Dissemination and Education Projects

Press Release Date: April 25, 2001

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) is seeking applications from domestic, public and private non-profit organizations, including professional societies, professional associations, educational leadership organizations, health care delivery organizations, health plans, units of State and local governments, and eligible agencies of the federal government, to fund studies to demonstrate and evaluate innovative approaches to provider education, dissemination of patient safety research results and best practices, and promotion of awareness of the need to improve safety. AHRQ expects to award up to $1.5 million to support the first year costs of four to seven projects under this Request for Applications (RFA), the sixth and final in a series of RFAs to be released in Fiscal Year 2001 under the Agency's new patient safety and medical errors research program.

The projects funded under this RFA are intended to develop, demonstrate and evaluate new approaches to improving provider education and practice in order to reduce medical errors and create a culture to improve patient safety. AHRQ seeks to support projects that can be replicated by others on a larger scale, and programs that make maximum use of active learning through the use of simulation, team training, and computer-based instruction, as well as traditional educational approaches to disseminate, implement, and evaluate provider education to improve patient safety.

The Agency has been allocated $50 million for research in patient safety and medical errors. All six of the series of integrated RFAs aimed at improving patient safety and reducing errors have now been released.

Letters of intent for the dissemination projects are due May 10, 2001; applications are due May 24, 2001.
