AHRQ Revamps Web Site To Make Information More Accessible

Media Advisory: June 22, 2000

The federal Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) today unveiled a newly redesigned Web site that offers reporters easier access to AHRQ news and information through its online Newsroom.

The Newsroom, at http://www.ahrq.gov/news/vnewsix.htm, provides concise information on key AHRQ initiatives, news announcements, publications and products. A new feature is the "Latest Headlines" section, which includes the most recent press releases and links to topical areas of health care research. The Newsroom portion of the site also features a mechanism for reporters to sign up for electronic updates.

The changes were part of a major redesign to make the AHRQ Web site faster and easier to use. The site includes:

  • A new design that makes it easier to find, read and print online information.
  • A special spotlight section that will change periodically to chronicle hot topics in health care.
  • An expanded list of data and surveys such as HCUPnet, an interactive tool for finding hospital statistics.
  • A special section dedicated to patients that lists everything from health conditions and diseases to information on selecting health plans.

The site includes more features tailored to meet the growing needs of online users, who are tapping into the Web for credible health care information like never before.

AHRQ is the lead agency charged with supporting research designed to improve the quality of health care, reduce its cost, improve patient safety, address medical errors, and broaden access to essential services. AHRQ sponsors and conducts research that provides evidence-based information on health care outcomes; quality; and cost, use, and access. The information helps health care decisionmakers—patients and clinicians, health system leaders, and policymakers—make more informed decisions and improve the quality of health care services.
