School District Demographics System

Census 1990

Prior to the 1990 Census, demographic data for school districts had been produced from the 1970 and 1980 decennial censuses by means of approximation of estimates for school district geographic areas. For the 1990 Census, the National Center for Education Statistics implemented the "Census Mapping Project." The Census Mapping Project marked the first time that maps depicting boundaries of school districts were prepared on a national basis. Boundaries from these maps were integrated into the Census Bureau TIGER files.

With school district boundaries an integral part of the TIGER files, it became possible to develop computer-based maps for school districts and develop the 1990 Census school district special tabulation.

Currently the entire dataset is published as web application and the users can access any data elements online using this website.
