The following changes in industry classifications and geography are reflected in the 2002 Nonemployer Statistics tabulations:
The 2002 NAICS (North American Industry Classification System) codes include changes in the following sectors:
- Construction (NAICS Sector 23)
- Wholesale Trade (NAICS Sector 42)
- Retail Trade (NAICS Sector 44-45)
- Information (NAICS Sector 51)

The following changes effect the Nonemployer tabulations starting with data year 2002:
In Colorado:
Broomfield County was created, effective November 15, 2001. Data tabulations are shown for this new county beginning with 2002.
In Virginia:
Clifton Forge is no longer an independent city (a county equivalent), effective July 1, 2001. Data which had been shown separately for Clifton Forge in prior years are included in the tabulations for Alleghany County beginning with 2002.

Metropolitan area definitions have been revised by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB). Beginning with 2002, Nonemployer Statistics data are available for the following four types of metropolitan areas:
- Combined Statistical Areas (CSAs)
- Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MeSAs)
- Micropolitan Statistical Areas (MiSAs)
- Metropolitan Divisions (MDs)
Counties and county equivalents will continue to be the basic geographic components (“building blocks”) used in all states to define all metropolitan areas for which Nonemployer Statistics data are presented.
