Summary File 3

Key socioeconomic data in over 800 tables down to the block-group or census-tract level!

Availability: Census 2000 Summary File 3 is available in several different file formats and media types. The software version contains retrieval software allowing users to manipulate, display, and download data from the file. The files also come in an ASCII version, but we recommend users attempt downloading a small file (e.g., the District of Columbia or Delaware) from the Internet. The file is also available online in the American FactFinder or in ASCII format through FTP.

Software Version:

  1. U.S. Summary. Two DVD set containing the complete SF 3  data file (V1-D00-S3ST-08-US1). Geography: States, counties, county subdivisions, places, census tracts, ZIP code tabulation areasĀ®, congressional districts (106th Congress), state and county portions of American Indian and Alaska Native Areas and Hawaiian Home Lands, and, for some subjects, census block groups. Users can plot radius analysis (e.g., population within a one-mile radius of node). Released June 16, 2003
  2. State Files. CD-ROMs containing complete SF 3 data for individual states on one or more discs, with access software. (See listing below for product IDs.) Same geographical areas as the U.S. Summary (see above).
  3. National File. One DVD containing SF 3 data for larger geographic areas, with access software (V1-D00-S3ST-08-NAT1). Geography: United States, regions, divisions, states, counties, county subdivisions, places, metropolitan statistical areas, ZIP Code Tabulation Areas®, congressional districts (106th Congress), American Indian and Alaska Native Areas, and Hawaiian Home Lands. Released July 7, 2003

ASCII Version:

  1. U.S. Summary. Two DVD set containing complete SF 3 file (V1-D00-S3ST-01-US1) in compressed ASCII format. Users must unzip files and download them into data base application. We recommend users consult the Read Me file for this product and try downloading one small state file from the Internet before ordering. ASCII version not available on CD-ROM. Same geographical areas as on the software version of the U.S. Summary.
  2. National File. One DVD containing SF 3 data for larger geographic areas (V1-D00-S3ST-06-NAT1). Same geographical areas as on the software version of the National File.

Subject content: Summary File 3 contains population and housing data based on Census 2000 questions asked on the long form of a one-in-six sample of the population. SF 3 contains 813 tables: 484 population tables and 329 housing tables.

Population items include marital status, disability, educational attainment, occupation, income, ancestry, veteran status, and many other characteristics. Housing items include tenure (whether the unit is owner- or renter-occupied), occupancy status, housing value, mortgage status, price asked, and more.
