A Message from the Chairman Welcome to the Senate Committee on the Judiciary's new website. Established in 1816, the Judiciary Committee is one of the oldest and historically rich Committees in Congress. Today, some of the most pressing issues considered by the Committee include anti-terrorism measures, trademark, copyright and patent laws, immigration policy and presidential nominations to fill vacancies on the federal judiciary and in executive departments. In addition, the Committee fulfills a vital oversight role, monitoring the activities of the Department of Justice and other agencies, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation. On this website, you will find a complete schedule of Judiciary Committee hearings and business meetings, as well as information about legislation considered by the Committee. A complete list of Committee-published reports related to pending legislation is also available. You will also find a listing of other Committee documents, including oversight correspondence sent by members of the Committee. Visit the resources page for more information. When the original colonies ratified the Constitution, Americans chartered a nation of laws, and established Congress as a co-equal branch in our government. In the spirit of making our government open and accessible to the constituents we represent, Ranking Member Specter and I hope you will find the resources available here useful. Welcome to the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Did You Know? On January 24, 1817, the Committee favorably reported a bill "to provide for the punishment of crimes and offences committed within the Indian boundaries." One of the first bills reported out of the Judiciary Committee, the Senate approved the measure and it became law on March 3, 1817. The law made legal offenses committed within the Indian territories subject to the same prosecution and punishment as if such offenses had been committed anywhere else in the United States. 09/25/2008 10:00 AM 09/24/2008 02:30 PM 09/24/2008 10:45 AM |
