BIS Under Secretary Mancuso Addresses Export Control Reforms

Washington (March 25)—Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) Under Secretary Mario Mancuso (pictured far right) spoke about recent reforms in U.S. export control policy at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS). These reforms aim to streamline U.S. dual-use export control regulations by making them more efficient and transparent. Under Secretary Mancuso addressed how these reforms will continue to facilitate U.S. technology leadership while strengthening U.S. national security. (More)

Commerce Secretary Gutierrez Reads to Children at White House Easter Egg Roll

Washington (March 24)—U.S. Secretary of Commerce Carlos M. Gutierrez participated in the 2008 White House Easter Egg Roll as a featured reader during the day’s events. Secretary Gutierrez joined other Cabinet members as well as former First Lady Barbara Bush and football star Troy Aikman in reading to children on the White House South Lawn. The 2008 White House Easter Egg Roll focused on the importance of ocean conservation to our national heritage, economy, and security. (More)

Gutierrez Announces Appointment of New Chief Information Officer

Washington (March 21)—Commerce Secretary Carlos M. Gutierrez issued the following statement on the appointment of Suzanne Hilding to serve as Chief Information Officer (CIO) for the Department: “I am pleased to announce Suzanne Hilding as our new Chief Information Officer. Under Suzanne’s leadership as Acting Chief Information Officer, the Department has made progress in developing stronger policies, strategies and processes in managing emerging threats in both the classified and unclassified domains.” (More)

NOAA Announces Spring Outlook: Current Major Flooding in U.S. a Sign of Things to Come

Washington (March 20)—Major floods striking America’s heartland this week offer a preview of the spring seasonal outlook, according to NOAA’s National Weather Service. Several factors will contribute to above-average flood conditions, including record rainfall in some states and snow packs, which are melting and causing rivers and streams to crest over their banks. This week, more than 250 communities in a dozen states are experiencing flood conditions. (More)

Census Bureau Announces New Orleans Parishes’ Top Nation in Population Growth Rate

Washington (March 20)—The U.S. Census Bureau announced two Louisiana parishes hit hard by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, St. Bernard and Orleans, were the nation’s fastest-growing counties in 2007, according to population estimates released today by the U.S. Census Bureau. St. Bernard—the nation’s fastest-losing county from 2005 to 2006—experienced a 42.9 percent population increase between July 1, 2006, and July 1, 2007, upping its population by almost 6,000. Orleans’ population rose by 13.8 percent, or nearly 29,000. (More)

NIST Partners with Fire Department of New York and Polytechnic University to Evaluate Firefighting Tactics

Gaithersburg, Md. (March 18)—Commerce’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is conducting experiments on New York’s Governors Island in partnership with the Fire Department of New York and New York’s Polytechnic University to examine the effectiveness of firefighting tactics such as the use of positive pressure ventilation fans, wind control devices and hose streams. Secretary Gutierrez Meets with Kansas City Regional Census Office Leadership to Discuss 2010 Census

Kansas City, Mo. (March 17)—Commerce Secretary Carlos M. Gutierrez met with the leadership of the Kansas City Regional Census office to discuss the 2010 Census and speak with employees. While in Kansas City, he also toured the Lenexa-based GEAR for Sports facility to discuss the economy with employees and participated in a panel discussion at the Kauffman Foundation that focused on fostering innovation in the U.S. workforce. Secretary Gutierrez Visits Memphis to Highlight U.S. Exports and Need for Colombia Trade Agreement

Memphis, Tenn. (March 14)—Commerce Secretary Carlos M. Gutierrez met with business leaders in Memphis to discuss the “bright spot” that U.S. exports are providing to the U.S. economy. He emphasized the importance of opening markets, particularly by passing the pending Colombia free trade agreement with Colombia. Gutierrez Discusses Economy, Immigration and Trade in Remarks to Hispanic Business Leaders

Washington (March 13)—At the legislative conference of the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Secretary Carlos M. Gutierrez spoke on key issues of importance to the Latino community, including immigration and free trade. Gutierrez highlighted the importance of engaging with our neighbors in Latin America. He said, “One of the best ways to enhance prosperity and security is to extend free markets, free speech and free trade wherever we can in our neighborhood.” (Transcript)
