Drug-Free Workplace Promising Practice
“By mandating employee training we provide employees with the most current information on the
perils of drug and alcohol abuse, and by offering EAPs we give our professionals an avenue to
break the chain of destructive behavior. These two programs increase the changes of
maintaining a safe and productive workforce.”

Black & Veatch
Black & Veatch Corporation is a global engineering, construction and consulting company
specializing in infrastructure development in the fields of energy, water and information. Founded
in 1915, it provides conceptual and preliminary engineering services, engineering design,
procurement, construction, financial management, asset management, information technology,
environmental, security design and consulting and management consulting services. The
employee-owned company is headquartered in Overland Park, Kansas and has more than 90
offices worldwide.
Black & Veatch’s drug-free workplace program centers around employee education, drug and
alcohol testing and Employee Assistance Program (EAP) services. It provides Web-based drug
and alcohol awareness training to all professionals and classroom instruction on signs and
symptoms of substance abuse and how to make referrals for supervisors of high-risk operations
such as construction. It conducts pre-employment, post accident, reasonable suspicion and
random drug and alcohol testing. The types of tests performed vary based on local laws and, in
some cases, union agreements. EAP services are offered to any permanent company employee
who fails a reasonable suspicion, post-accident or random test. Employees can also access EAP
services at their own discretion. Employees who enter an EAP are closely monitored to ensure
program success.
In managing its drug-free workplace program, Black & Veatch engages several partners,
including: St. Lukes Hospital (EAP services); Employer Health Services (Medical Review Officer);
eScreen (corporate/office location drug testing); Kroll Laboratory Specialists (construction site
drug testing); and Liberty Mutual (drug and alcohol awareness training).
