SECRETARY CARLOS M. GUTIERREZ STATEMENT
ON DAVID H. McCORMICK
Under Secretary McCormick to Become Deputy National Security Advisor
for International Economic Affairs

Washington, D.C . - Commerce Secretary Carlos M. Gutierrez released the following statement on President Bush’s appointment of David H. McCormick to be Deputy National Security Advisor for International Economic Affairs:

“I am very pleased by the President’s appointment of Dave McCormick to join his team at the White House. Dave has been a terrific Under Secretary of Commerce for Industry and Security, promoting President Bush’s agenda by crafting policies that protect national security and promote trade at the same time.

“I am very pleased that he will continue that work as Deputy National Security Advisor for International Economic Affairs. In this key post, Dave will play a central role in advancing the President's international economic agenda of opening markets, leveling the playing field and promoting global growth, prosperity and development.

“Dave has demonstrated the leadership, creativity, and dedication that will make him an outstanding addition to the White House staff. I look forward to continuing to work with him in his new capacity.”

Background

Since 2005, McCormick has headed the Commerce Department’s Bureau of Industry and Security, which advances U.S. foreign policy, national security, and economic objectives through effective policies for technology controls, treaty compliance, and continued U.S. leadership in strategic industries.

Prior to his service as Under Secretary, McCormick was the President of Ariba, Inc. and the President and CEO of FreeMarkets, Inc., both publicly traded software and services companies. He has also worked as a consultant for McKinsey & Company.

Born in Pennsylvania, McCormick earned a mechanical engineering degree from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and received his Ph.D. from the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University. He is a former Army officer and a veteran of the first Gulf War.
