Under Secretary Mancuso Meets with the Association for Manufacturing Technology

Washington – On May 1st, Under Secretary of Commerce Mario Mancuso met with senior leadership from the Association for Manufacturing Technology (AMT) and discussed the bureau’s policies priorities and status of key initiatives.  AMT represents and promotes the interests of American providers of manufacturing machinery and equipment.

Following his briefing to the AMT, Under Secretary Mancuso later noted that:

• The VEU Program is an innovative approach to export controls and BIS is optimistic that it will help increase U.S. high tech exports in the long-run.
• With regards to the program in China, BIS has worked and will continue to work on implementation to ensure the program’s success in advancing U.S. economic and national security interests.
• BIS has worked continuously and cooperatively with China’s Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) to ensure that legitimate technology trade is supported by an effective compliance and enforcement architecture. 
• The infrastructure exists today, and is fundamental to our bilateral high tech trade relationship. 
• If this were to change, VEU in China could not move forward.

BACKGROUND
Under Secretary Mancuso heads the Bureau of Industry and Security which promotes continued U.S. strategic technology leadership and helps to advance national security, foreign policy and economic objectives by ensuring an effective export control and treaty compliance system. 

Mr. Mancuso is responsible for global dual-use trade policy, and leads multilateral and bilateral strategic trade dialogues for the U. S., including the U.S.-China High Technology and Strategic Trade Working Group and the U.S.-India High Technology Cooperation Group, and manages a bureau with offices throughout the United States and in China, India, Hong Kong, Russia, and the United Arab Emirates.
