Statement by Secretary Gutierrez on New Offer of Humanitarian Aid to Cuba
WASHINGTON—U.S. Commerce Secretary Carlos M. Gutierrez today released the following statement on a fifth offer of humanitarian aid to Cuba after hurricanes Gustav and Ike devastated the island in August:
“This marks the fifth time we have offered help to the Cuban people after the devastation caused by Hurricanes Gustav and Ike. The American people and government are committed to helping the Cuban people in their hour of need. We will continue our efforts to help the Cuban people through public and private means.”
The U.S. Government has offered to provide $3.5 million through the United Nations for hurricane relief for Cuba.This money responds to an appeal by United Nations agencies for hurricane assistance for the people of Cuba. The U.S. contribution will provide food, clean water, sanitation and health care services to the Cuban victims of the recent hurricanes.
Secretary Gutierrez co-chairs the Commission for Assistance to a Free Cuba with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, a U.S. Cabinet-level commission formed to explore ways the United States can help hasten and ease a democratic transition in Cuba.
