Ag Day at the Capitol is the largest gathering of farmers from across the state representing a variety of farm commodities groups to learn more about state issues, and meet with their elected officials. The estate tax is commonly referred to as the ‘death tax’. It is a tax on accumulated wealth that is imposed at the time property is transferred following a death. It is based on the value of the estate, without consideration for the amount received by any beneficiary or the relationship between the deceased and the beneficiary (although transfers to a surviving spouse may be exempt from an estate tax).
