USPTO Hosts Month-long Exhibit of Winning Inventions from 2007 National Competition

Alexandria, Va. (May 31)—Under Secretary of Commerce and Director of the United States Patent and Trademark Office Jon Dudas unveils a national interactive exhibit featuring inventions of the 2007 Modern Marvels Invent Now® Challenge competition. The challenge, presented by the History Channel® and the National Inventors Hall of Fame® Foundation, and sponsored in part by the USPTO, is a national invention contest that invites independent inventors to share their vision and ingenious designs with the world. Assistant Secretary Kneuer Briefs U.S. Conference of Mayors on $1 Billion Interoperability Grant Program

Washington (May 30)—Assistant Secretary John Kneuer briefed the U.S. Conference of Mayors on the $1 billion Public Safety Interoperability Communications Grant Program, which covers public safety agencies in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and four U.S. territories. The program will assist public safety agencies in the acquisition of, deployment of, or training for the use of interoperable communications systems. (More)

EDA Assistant Secretary Presents $1 Million Investment Check to Northeastern Pennsylvania

Gutierrez Addresses Faith-Based and Community Groups at White House

Washington (May 29)—Secretary of Commerce Carlos M. Gutierrez addressed a roundtable organized by the office of Faith Based and Community Initiatives at the White House. The event was focused on promoting economic development and community investment through public/private partnerships. Gutierrez discussed the role of the Economic Development Administration (EDA) in this effort. Since 2001, EDA has invested more than $147 million in 187 different faith-based or community projects. NOAA Highlights Outdoor Holiday Hazards

Washington (May 29)—With Memorial Day weekend marking the unofficial start of summer, NOAA is cautioning those with outdoor activities to be watchful for weather and ocean hazards that are common this time of year, including lightning and rip currents. Rip currents are powerful, channeled currents of water flowing away from shore. Safety information on these other hazards is available on the NOAAWatch hazards portal.

Washington (May 25)—Secretary of Commerce Carlos M. Gutierrez issued the following statement upon Senate confirmation of Mario Mancuso, the President’s nominee to be Under Secretary of Commerce for Export Administration. “I thank the Senate for its prompt confirmation of Mario Mancuso. Gutierrez and Chertoff Brief Reporters on Immigration Bill

Washington (May 24)—At the Commerce Department, Secretary of Commerce Carlos M. Gutierrez and Secretary of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff briefed regional print reporters on the comprehensive immigration reform legislation currently under debate in the United States Senate. The Secretaries have led the Administration's efforts with a bipartisan group of Senators to craft an immigration reform proposal that secures our nation's border while addressing our economy's need for immigrant workers.

Gutierrez Honors 11 Companies with Presidential Awards for Exporting Success

Washington (May 24)—Commerce Secretary Carlos M. Gutierrez joined President Bush at the White House to present eleven American companies with “E” Awards for excellence in exporting. “Each of these "E" award companies are helping to grow new markets around the world and I commend them for contributing to last year’s record of $1.4 trillion in goods and services exports.” (More)

Peterlin Speaks on Intellectual Property Counterfeiting and Piracy at Small Business Summit

Washington (May 24)—United States Patent and Trade Office Deputy Under Secretary Margaret Peterlin warned in remarks at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Small Business Summit in Washington, D.C. that piracy and counterfeiting around the world are on the rise and said IP-based companies, which include many small businesses, are the most vulnerable. American IP is estimated to be worth more than $5 trillion—which is about half of the U.S. gross domestic product, and greater than the GDP of any other nation in the world. (More)
