BIS Hosts Ceremony Marking Completion of 100 Industry Inspections Under the Chemical Weapons Convention

BIS is the lead agency within the US government for commercial industry inspections. The milestone inspection demonstrates the successful interaction between BIS and the chemical industry of the United States to ensure compliance with the CWC - all with no reported loss of proprietary or confidential business information.

The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) implements the Chemical Weapons Convention, banning the development, production, stockpiling and use of chemical weapons. The OPCW Member States and global chemical industry work in partnership to prevent the spread of chemical weapons by cooperating with on-site inspections of industrial facilities and monitoring the transfer of certain chemicals, including on-site inspections around the world.

The first industry inspection in the United States was in May of 2000, and this has been followed by approximately one inspection a month since that time. BIS has also worked with the Department of Defense, Department of Justice and the chemical industry to conduct 84 site assistance visits and sixteen other outreach activities to assist industry in its readiness and preparation.
