Individual State Descriptions provides information about the organization of state and local governments.

It describes:
the types of governments in each state
the number of governments by type in each state
the powers and responsibilities those governments have
subordinate agencies that are not separate governments in themselves, but which perform public services on behalf of their "parent" government

Governments are organized differently in different states--meaning, the responsibilities for collecting revenue, borrowing money, spending public funds, and employing people to provide public services will also vary by state. This document provides the context for interpreting government finance and public employment statistics.
