This section provides information about census coverage and reporting for establishments in the Manufacturing sector.

ESTABLISHMENTS COVERED

Manufacturing establishments use mechanical, physical or chemical methods to transform materials, substances or components into new products. The "raw materials" transformed may include natural, mined, quarried, extracted, refined, and other manufactured products. The new products may include semi-finished as well as finished products, and products made under contract by another establishment. NAICS classifies establishments in the Manufacturing sector using numbers that start with 31 through 33. NAICS provides separate sub-classifications for food and fiber manufacturers, nonmetal product manufacturers, and metal product manufacturers.

The Economic Census covers all manufacturing establishments that operated during all or part of calendar year 2002. Examples establishments in this sector include:

• Food and fiber manufacturers, including makers of human and animal foods, preserved and perishable foods, alcoholic and soft drinks, tobacco products, textile mills and products, and apparel, leather and footwear products.
  
  
• Nonmetal product manufacturers, including sawmills and makers of wood products, makers of manufactured homes, paper mills and makers of paper products, commercial printers and binders, petroleum and coal product makers, chemical product makers, rubber and plastic product makers, and nonmetallic mineral product makers.
  
  
• Metal product manufacturers, including primary metal mills and industrial product makers, fabricated industrial and finished product makers, industrial machinery and commercial equipment makers, computer and electronic product makers, electrical equipment and appliance makers, transportation vehicle and equipment makers, furniture and related product makers, and professional, consumer and other equipment makers.

Establishments that are not classified in the Manufacturing MC sector, but are classified in other NAICS sectors, include construction and printing establishments.

CENSUS MAIL PACKAGE

All manufacturing establishments that had paid employees, and are significant in their industry or geographic locations, will receive a census mail package with several types of materials. The materials are similar in content but customized to make reporting easier for different groups of manufacturing establishments. Each establishment will receive a census form. In addition, establishments that receive a census form will also receive an Information Sheet.

Information Sheets provide general information about the census and instructions for reporting selected items on the census form.

Census Forms describe each data item for census accommodation and food services establishments, and provide instructions and formats for reporting each item. Manufacturing forms are numbered MC-31xxx - MC-33xxx. Forms are tailored to industry groups and four separate forms are available for use by different kinds of manufacturing establishments.
