U.S. Census Bureau Kicks Off 2008 Dress Rehearsal, Opens Local Census Offices

Ceremonial ribbon to open the Fayetteville Local Census OfficeAPRIL 18, 2007 – The Census Bureau opened Local Census Offices to mark the kickoff of the 2008 Census Dress Rehearsal. The opening of the local offices in Fayetteville, N.C., and San Joaquin County, Calif., also marks the beginning of a recruiting effort to hire nearly 5,000 part-time workers.

The Local Census Offices will serve as the home base for conducting the 2008 Census Dress Rehearsal activities and population counts. Hundreds of local residents will be hired in the next few months to update address lists. As dress rehearsal activities progress through the summer of 2008, the Census Bureau will hire additional part-time workers to interview residents who do not mail back their census questionnaires.

Community leaders joined the Census Bureau in kicking off the 2008 Census Dress Rehearsal with events in Fayetteville, N.C., and Stockton, Calif., on April 12 and 18, respectively.
