Profiles of Older Workers: 2004 — The Census Bureau, in partnership with 31 states, has launched a series of reports on workers 55 and older. Tennessee’s report is scheduled for release on Oct. 14, and the Washington report is scheduled for Oct. 15. Economic
2007 State and Local Government Employees and Payroll — These figures about the nation’s 89,526 state and local governments will be the first comprehensive data from the 2007 Census of Governments. Local governments include counties, cities, townships, special districts and school districts. (Scheduled for release Oct. 22.)
Facts for Features
American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month (November) — Presidents have signed proclamations to honor the nation’s 4.5 million American Indian and Alaska Natives each year at this time. This group is younger and has larger families than the national population. (Tentatively scheduled for release in mid-October.)
Veterans Day (Nov. 11) — Parades and speeches across the country, as well as a national ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery, highlight this federal holiday. Some of the statistics from this day include the number of veterans in the country, their racial and ethnic backgrounds, and the number who vote. (Tentatively scheduled for release in mid-October.)
Holiday Season — The Census Bureau presents numerous facts and figures related to Christmas and other holidays this joyous time of year. (Tentatively scheduled for release in late October.)
Editor’s note: Facts for Features are customarily released about two months before an observance in order to accommodate magazine production timelines.

Profile America and Al Día (Spanish) — Profile America is a daily, 60-second feature that uses interesting vignettes from key events, observances or commemorations for that day to highlight information collected by the Census Bureau. Upcoming segments include a breakthrough in timekeeping with the “First Electronic Watch” (Oct. 25), and a new way of keeping track of sales in “Cash Register Invented” (Nov. 2). Small Area Health Insurance Estimates: 2005 — Oct. 9 — The Census Bureau released the most extensive estimates it has ever published on county-level demographic characteristics of people with and without health insurance coverage. The 2005 estimates cover all states and counties across gender, age and income as well as race and Hispanic origin (for states only).

American Housing Survey: 2007 — Oct. 6 — Housing units in the United States increased from 124 million in 2005 to 128 million in 2007, and the number of occupied housing units went from 109 million to 111 million. This report provides information on things such as the presence of air conditioning, type of heating fuel, neighborhood satisfaction, rental assistance and size of the home.

2008 Capital Spending Report: U.S. Capital Spending Patterns, 1999-2006 — Oct. 7 — Capital spending by all U.S. businesses rose 14 percent to a record high $1.3 trillion in 2006. This surpasses the previous high of $1.16 trillion in 2000. This report reveals data about firms with and without employees, expenditures for structures and equipment, and expenditures for major industry sectors. The data comes from the Annual Capital Expenditures Survey.

Consolidated Federal Funds Report: 2007 and Federal Aid to States for Fiscal Year 2007 — Oct. 2 — The federal government allocated $2.56 trillion in domestic spending for fiscal year 2007, up 4.4 percent from 2006. Retirement and disability payments to individuals accounted for $783 billion (more than 30 percent). The data from these two reports are obtained from federal agencies and describe spending for procurement contracts, salaries and wages, direct payments, loans and insurance, as well as federal grants to state and local governments.
