Council Description
CERT Program: On a monthly basis, we provide a 20 hour CERT basic training that has been adapted to reflect local disaster response and experience. After completing the 20 hour training, those who wish to be volunteers may be placed in a calling tree in order to be dispatched outside of their neighborhoods or workplace; have background checks; are required to take a 3.5 hr CERT refresher course every 2 years; and participate in monthly CERT member meetings, drills, and community activities. Our program provides many benefits for the CERT volunteers and the CERT trained individuals, such as, training and preparedness in order to be able to respond to disaster within their neighborhood or workplace, accountability, continuing education for volunteers, refresher courses, volunteer handbooks, leadership handbooks, monthly e-newsletter, program web-site with weekly updates, and response resources. The American Red Cross dispatches registered CERT volunteers at the request of local Emergency Managers, Fire Departments, Sheriff's Departments, and Police Departments. Most recently, we've been activated or requested to help man blockades, help search for a missing person, install smoke detectors in high risk areas, check neighborhoods for busted weather heads, assist with Flu vaccination clinics, deliver food and supplies to disaster victims, work in evacuation shelters, and act as safety officers during major events.
