Council Description
Marbletown NY is a rural town in upstate NY with a large geographic area. We are 2 hours from NYC and our community is growing with 2nd homeowners and families moving in from urban areas. Much of our region is wooded and mountainous with large land preserves. The Town of Marbletown Citizen Corp Council is the vehicle to engage the private sector in planning for emergencies. It is a portal that will bring together community groups, faith-base organizations, neighbor hood watch groups, schools and businesses to leverage mutually supportive volunteer endeavors. The Council will be expanded to include members of community service organizations, trainers to train and support first responders in the event of a major emergency. These volunteers will be equipped, trained in preparedness, safety for volunteers, triage, and disaster psychology. We have our first CERT team as of November 2005. These initial members have also been trained in Basic First Aid, CPR Pro and most have Wilderness Training. One of our goals is to have all CERT members reach out in their local neighborhoods and identify potential resources, problems (ex: shut -ins, elderly, non drivers etc) that can be updated regularly and put into an encrypted emergency town database. Volunteer service is about engaging people and teaching them about the 4 steps in an emergency; prevention, mitigation, response and recovery. Teaching people that engaging organizations makes our communities better, safer, stronger, the theory being that if you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem. By knowing what to do and what not to do, community volunteers become valuable players in the pyramid. Learning about personal strengths and bringing existing knowledge to the team is important. We can rely on people who feel confident and trained in areas they are comfortable in.
