Scott R. Smith, M.S.P.H., Ph.D.

Scott R. Smith, M.S.P.H., Ph.D., is a Senior Service Fellow in the Center for Outcomes and Evidence (COE). Dr. Smith is a registered pharmacist with a Master's degree in public health from the University of Illinois and a doctorate in pharmaceutical sciences from the University of Michigan.

At AHRQ, Smith heads the pharmaceutical outcomes research programs involving collaborations across all AHRQ centers and programs. In the COE, Dr. Smith works with the Centers for Education and Research on Therapeutics (CERTs), the Evidence-based Practice Centers (EPCs), Research Initiative in Clinical Economics (RICE), and the technology assessment group. Dr. Smith's research interests are related to pharmaceutical outcomes and he is a national expert in designing studies that measure medication adherence/compliance. Dr. Smith's other research interests include pharmacoepidemiology, access to health care services, geographic information systems, health care informatics, social-behavioral risk factors, the adverse effects of chronic drug exposure, and longitudinal data analysis.

Dr. Smith is active in several professional organizations including the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA), the American Public Health Association (APHA), the International Society for Pharmacoepidemiology (ISPE), and the American Pharmacists Association (APhA). Formerly, Dr. Smith was a tenured Associate Professor at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill (UNC) where he maintains adjunct faculty appointments in the Schools of Pharmacy and Public Health.
