Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Hurricane Katrina's Effect on Construction Spending

What will be the effect of Hurricane Katrina on Construction Spending for 2005?
The effected states (AL, LA, MS) comprised a little over 3% of the total construction spending for the United States in 2004 so the overall effect will be minimal.

Will the collection of construction data from the affected areas be impacted?
The survey collection process will follow normal data collection procedures. There are some sampled projects, which will be unable to continue construction. These projects will be considered completed and therefore will not be included in subsequent data periods. As reconstruction takes place, this activity will be included in our universe of construction projects.

Will completely rebuilt projects, those that have been destroyed or razed, be included in the Construction Spending figures?
Yes, however the money spent on demolitions and related activities will be excluded from the figures. For projects where demolition and re-build are in the same contract, we will attempt to exclude the demolition portion through additional follow-up with respondents or other sources.

Will clean up costs be reported or at least available to the data user?
No. Clean up is not defined as construction spending.
