Grandparents Day 2002: Sept. 8

To mark the celebration of Grandparents Day, the Census Bureau has culled from recently released Census 2000 reports (and other sources) the following facts pertaining to grandparents. Census 2000 marked the first census in which a question was asked about grandparents as caregivers.

5.8 million
The number of grandparents who lived with any of their grandchildren under 18 in 2000.

2.4 million
The number of grandparents responsible for most of the basic needs (i.e., food, shelter, clothing) of one or more of the grandchildren they lived with in 2000. This represented 42 percent of all grandparents who lived with their grandchildren.

59
The percentage of grandparents in Wyoming living with their grandchildren in 2000 who were responsible for most of the basic needs of one or more of them. This was the highest rate in the nation. Oklahoma, Arkansas and South Dakota were next, at 58 percent each. The lowest rates belonged to Massachusetts and Hawaii, both at 28 percent.

3.9 million
The number of multigenerational family households in the United States in 2000; these are families where grandparents lived under the same roof with two or more generations of descendants. These households represented 4 percent of all households.

65
The percentage of multigenerational households in which the grandparent was the householder and lived with their children and their grandchildren. There were 2.6 million of these households.

33
The percentage of multigenerational households in which the grandparent lived in the home of their children (or son- or daughter-in-law) along with their children's children. These households numbered 1.3 million.

2
The percentage of multigenerational households (78,000) that included both grandparents and great-grandparents, as well as the children and grandchildren of the grandparents. The great-grandparents could include parents-in-law of the grandparents.

8.2
The percentage of households in Hawaii that were of the multigenerational family type in 2000. Hawaii led the nation. California (5.6 percent) and Mississippi (5.2 percent) were the only other states that exceeded 5 percent.

1.1
The percentage of households in North Dakota in 2000 made up of multigenerational families, smallest of any state in the nation. The other states with fewer than 2 percent were Iowa, Maine, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, South Dakota, Vermont, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

 5.4 million
The number of grandchildren living in a grandparent's home in 2000. Of these children, 4.5 million were under 18. <http://factfinder.census.gov/servlet/BasicFactsServlet>

21
The percentage of preschoolers in 1997 who were cared for by their grandparents while their mother was employed or in school. Grandparents were the leading child-care providers for preschoolers who were in some type of child-care arrangement. Only 15 percent of these grandparents were paid for providing this care, with payments averaging $40 per week -- half the amount charged by day-care centers. <http://www.census.gov/Press-Release/www/2002/cb02-102.html>
