OnTheMap Version 3 Geographic Contact Information

* The Cities and Towns geography layer is composed of both Incorporated Places (IPs) and Census Designated Places (CDPs). CDPs, although synchronized to TIGER 2006 geo-referencing and precision, are based on TIGER 2000 boundary definitions. In the infrequent case where a 2000 CDP overlaps with a 2006 IP, the more current place (2006 IP) is given precedence. Therefore all 2006 IPs are complete and intact, and 2000 CDPs have been added to OnTheMap where possible. Although rare, this situation can result in altered/cut CDP boundaries if a more current IP has annexed land since the 2000 Census.

** Three different School District geographic layers are released in the Census Bureau TIGER data, Unified, Elementary, and Secondary. While the Secondary School Districts layer appears in OnTheMap Version 3 as released in TIGER, the Elementary and Unified School Districts have been combined into one layer to create a standard layer with national coverage. Additionally, alterations have been made to the school district geographies in two locations: New York City and Hawaii. (1) NY City Dep. Of Education polygon (20580) in the Unified layer has been replaced by 32 polygons from the 2000 Elementary layer in order to show sub-districts. Only those 32 polygons contained by the 5 buroughs were taken from the 2000 Elementary layer, all Current Elementary polygons in NY appear as-is in the Unified/Elementary layer. (2) HI Dep. Of Education polygon (00030) in Unified has been replaced with 2000 Elementary and Secondary school records in order to show sub-districts within HI. Because Kalawao county is empty in the 2000 Elementary and Secondary schools, the county becomes part of Moloka'i (10865) district for Secondary schools, and part of Maui (10075) district for the Unified/Elementary layer.
