Note: For job definitions not otherwise specified, the reference period is the 2nd quarter of each year.

Shed Report Terms

Total Jobs A count of all jobs that meet a user's specification of geography (origin and possibly destination), years, and/or labor market segments.

Total Primary Jobs A count of primary jobs that meet a user's specification of geography (origin and possibly destination), years, and/or labor market segments. A primary job is the highest paying job for an individual worker for the year. The count of primary jobs is the same as the count of workers.

Total Private Jobs A count of private-sector jobs that meet a user's specification of geography (origin and possibly destination), years, and/or labor market segments.

Total Private Primary Jobs A count of private-sector primary jobs that meet a user's specification of geography (origin and possibly destination), years, and/or labor market segments. A primary job is the highest paying job (either public or private) for an individual worker for the year.

Job Counts in [Selected Rollup Layer] Where Workers Live This panel shows the top 10 locations for the selected rollup layer (or top 5 locations for States) that are the places of residence for the workers in the selected geographic area and meet the user's other analysis settings. "All Other Locations" covers all locations not included in the top 10, including areas in other states or U.S. territories. (Labor Shed report only)

Job Counts in [Selected Rollup Layer] Where Resident-Workers are Employed This panel shows the top 10 locations for the selected rollup layer (or top 5 locations for States) that are workplaces for residents in the selected geographic area and meet the user's other analysis settings. "All Other Locations" covers all locations not included in the top 10, including areas in other states or U.S. territories. (Commute Shed report only)

Workers who Work/Live in the first selection area In a Paired Shed Report, the count of [Selected Job Type and Labor Market Segment] working/living in the first selection area (origin), without taking into account the Paired second selection area (destination).

Workers who Work/Live in the first selection area and Live/Work in the second selection area In a Paired Shed Report, the count of [Selected Job Type and Labor Market Segment] that share the selected work and home locations. Also included is the share of the Paired total to the first selection area (origin) only total.

Report Settings A section at the bottom of each report summarizing the choices made in the four steps of the Analysis tab.

Area Profile Report Terms

Total Jobs A count of all jobs that meet a user's specification of geography (origin and possibly destination), years, and/or labor market segments.

Total Primary Jobs A count of primary jobs that meet a user's specification of geography (origin and possibly destination), years, and/or labor market segments. A primary job is the highest paying job for an individual worker for the year. The count of primary jobs is the same as the count of workers.

Total Private Jobs A count of private-sector jobs that meet a user's specification of geography (origin and possibly destination), years, and/or labor market segments.

Total Private Primary Jobs A count of private-sector primary jobs that meet a user's specification of geography (origin and possibly destination), years, and/or labor market segments. A primary job is the highest paying job (either public or private) for an individual worker for the year.

Jobs by Worker Age This panel show three age breakout categories from the Total [Selected Job Type]. The categories are Age 30 or younger, Age 31 to 54 years, and Age 55 or older.

Jobs by Earnings Paid This panel shows three earnings breakout categories from the Total [Selected Job Type]. The categories are $1,200 per month or less, $1,201 to $3,400 per month, and More than $3,400 per month.

Jobs by Industry Type (2-digit NAICS) This panel shows 20 industry breakout sectors from the Total [Selected Job Type]. The categories are all 2-digit NAICS codes, otherwise known as industry sectors. Not available when a Paired Area is selected. See the U.S. Census Bureau's documentation on NAICS for more information on these industry sectors.

Jobs by Industry Type In a Paired Area Profile report, this panel shows 3 industry grouping breakouts from the Paired Total [Selected Job Type]. The industry groupings are Goods Producing (which includes NAICS 11, 21, 23, and 31-33), Trade, Transportation, and Utilities (which includes NAICS 42, 44-45, 48-49, and 22), and All Other Services (which includes the remaining 12 2-digit NAICS industry sectors). See the U.S. Census Bureau's documentation on NAICS for more information on these industry sectors.

QWI Indicators - Private Sector Jobs A set of ten quarterly workforce indicators based on the beginning of 2nd quarter in the selected years. Definitions of each of the indicators are listed below (Work Area Profile report only).

Number of Employers The total number of establishments employing workers in the selected area on the first day of the 2nd quarter for each of the three years of historical data.

Employment (Beginning-of-2nd quarter) Estimate of the total number of jobs on the first day of the reference (in this case, 2nd) quarter.

Employment, Stable Jobs Estimate of stable jobs, i.e., the number of jobs that are held on both the first and last day of the quarter with the same employer.

Separations, Stable Jobs Estimated number of workers who held a job for at least a full quarter and then the job ended. It is the total number of workers employed in the previous full quarter who left their employer in the reference quarter.

New Hires, Stable Jobs Estimated number of workers who started a job that they had not held within the past year and the job lasted at least a full quarter with a given employer. Total number of workers who were new hires by the employer in the last quarter and are full-quarter employed in the current quarter.

Firm Job Gain Estimated number of new jobs added at firms throughout the quarter.

Firm Job Loss Estimated number of jobs lost at firms throughout the quarter.

Employment (reference quarter) A count of people employed in a firm at any time during the quarter. It is not a count of jobs.

Average Monthly Earnings, Stable Jobs Average monthly earnings of employees with stable jobs (i.e., jobs with the same firm throughout the quarter).

Average Monthly Earnings Separations from Stable Jobs Average monthly earnings of separations from full-quarter status at an establishment.

Average Monthly Earnings, New Hires, Stable Jobs Average monthly earnings of newly stable (i.e., full-quarter) employees who were new hires with a firm in the previous quarter.
