To meet their dam licensing agreements, operators of privately owned dams are required to offset the unavoidable loss of endangered salmon passing the dam by restoring and enhancing streams and providing hatcheries. Finding suitable side channels is made difficult by subtle features and overgrowth.
To help the Mid-Columbia Tributary Committee identify sites for restoration and enhancement and guide on-the-ground efforts in the most efficient way, the USGS is developing a technical tool that integrates high-accuracy, high-resolution elevation data with elevation models, slope models, and digital color orthophotography. The tool will digitize directly on a computer display the location of inactive side channels for consideration as restoration and enhancement sites.
