In many ecosystems, more water is lost through evapotranspiration (ET, the evaporation of water from land and transpiration from plants) than by any other way. For that reason, accurate estimates of evapotranspiration are important for accurate evaluations of the water balance in ecosystems. In areas such as Klamath Marsh and Lower Klamath National Wildlife Refuge, where water resources are often fully allocated, land managers such as the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service need information about management options related to ET.
To help the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and others manage the water resources of the Lower Klamath National Wildlife Refuge and adjacent areas, the USGS is studying the ET from different types of habitat to help evaluate how land-use methods can affect ET.
