Definition:
A housing unit is a house, an apartment, a mobile home, a group of rooms, or a single room that is occupied (or if vacant, is intended for occupancy) as separate living quarters. Separate living quarters are those in which the occupants live and eat separately from any other persons in the building and which have direct access from the outside of the building or through a common hall.
Scope and Methodology:
These data for 2000 were derived from answers to questions included on the every form (100%) sent to households in the 2000 Census of Population and Housing.
The data for states and counties are estimated annually. Subcounty population estimates are produced by a housing unit method that uses housing unit change to distribute county population to subcounty areas. The state and county housing unit estimates are aggregations of these housing unit estimates.
