Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao Announces $10 Million In Grants For Hurricane Isabel Cleanup In North Carolina
Grant Will Be Used To Create Temporary Jobs For Cleanup, Restoration

Raleigh, N.C. - U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao today announced a National Emergency Grant totaling $10 million to create 2,000 temporary jobs for cleanup and restoration efforts taking place as a result of damage caused by Hurricane Isabel.

"The President and I want to do everything we can to help the people of North Carolina recover from the devastation of Hurricane Isabel as quickly as possible," U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao said. "This $10 million grant will create 2,000 jobs for unemployed workers who will help in the cleanup and restoration for the people, businesses, and communities of this great state."

Individuals eligible to participate in the disaster-related temporary jobs creation program include those who have been dislocated from their jobs as a result of the disaster, the long-term unemployed, and other eligible dislocated workers. Workers who want to learn more about applying for one of the jobs created by this grant can sign up at their local JobLink Center. To find a local JobLink Center, visit http://www.joblink.state.nc.us/centers/ or call (919) 715-3300.

The temporary jobs created by this grant will be used to provide disaster-related assistance in 26 counties declared eligible for Public Assistance by the Federal Emergency Management System (FEMA).

The grant will fund projects that provide food, clothing, shelter, and other humanitarian aid to victims of the disaster caused by Hurricane Isabel.

Funds will also be used to repair and reconstruct businesses and facilities located within the disaster areas.

National Emergency Grants are part of the secretary's discretionary fund. A grant is awarded after a state submits a request and the grant guidelines have been met.
