U.S. Department of Labor announces grant exceeding $2 million to  assist dislocated workers in Idaho

WASHINGTONThe U.S. Department of Labor today announced a grant of $2,010,277, with an initial release of $847,538, to assist approximately 400 Idaho workers dislocated as a result of layoffs occurring at Micron Technology Inc., which is located in Boise.

“This $2 million grant will provide these Idaho workers with skills training, career counseling and other employment services to help them find and succeed in new jobs,” said U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao.

The grant, awarded to the Idaho Department of Labor, will provide affected workers with a full array of services, including skills assessment, individual career counseling, career and occupational skills training, and relocation assistance.

On July 12, Micron Technology issued a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification announcing plans to begin layoffs.  State officials conducted six Rapid Response sessions throughout June and July to inform the affected workers of the assistance available to them through the public workforce system.

National Emergency Grants are part of the secretary of labor’s discretionary fund and are awarded based on a state’s ability to meet specific guidelines. For more information on National Emergency Grants, please visit www.doleta.gov/NEG.
