A wide range of library statistics are collected for the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES).

These include:

  • The Public Libraries Survey collects nationwide descriptive statistics on all public libraries in the United States. These statistics include service measures such as reference transactions, public service hours, circulation, library visits, size of collections, staffing, operating income and expenditures, electronic technology and summary information about the number and type of public library service outlets.

  • The State Library Agencies are the official agencies charged with state-wide library development and the administration of federal funds authorized by the Library Services and Technology Act. Data collected in this survey include direct library services; library development services; resources assigned to allied operations such as archive and records management; organizational and governance structure within which the agency operates; electronic networking; staffing; collections; and expenditures.

  • The Academic Library Survey collects data from academic libraries of postsecondary institutions. Data items collected include, total library operating expenditures, full-time-equivalent library staff, service outlets, total volumes held at the end of the academic year, circulation, public service hours, patron count, and reference transactions per typical week as well as selected electronic services offered.
