Overview

The Fermentation Biotechnology Research Unit (FBT) develops methods to convert agricultural commodities such as corn and crop residues into biofuels and chemicals, enzymes and polymers.

Metabolic engineering technologies are developed to modify microorganisms used in fermentation in order to increase the variety of usable substrates, improve conversion efficiencies and produce new and value added products.

The FBT unit also develops anaerobic microbiological processes to enhance environmental quality by improving swine waste management systems.
